Dr. Ray P. Authement, who led the University of Louisiana at Lafayette as its president for three decades, died Sunday, April 5. He was 91.
Authement was president 34 years. When he retired in 2008, he was the longest-serving public university president in the United States.
In a statement, Dr.
Louisiana’s COVID-19 case count soared by nearly 2,000 Monday as an avalanche of test results flooded in. The state posted 1,857 new cases and 35 more deaths since Sunday.

Opelousas-Private Graveside services will be held for Gene Adam Lavergne at Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas.
Gene Lavergne, 68, beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather, was called to his eternal resting place with Our Lord on April 3, 2020, at Lafayette General Medical Center at the age of 68.
Ellis Pitre passed away on Friday, April 3, 2020 at the age of 80. A Private Graveside Service will be held at Billeau Cemetery with Deacon Chuck Ortego officiating. A Memorial Service will be planned at a later date.
Administrative Day cancelled
The Eunice Rotary Club has cancelled its annual Administrative Professionals’ Day scheduled for the end of April.
With the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and much discussion and many weeks of planning the Rotary has decided to cancel the event.
