Plans for new hospital in Church Point announced

\Plans for a new Acadia St. Landry Hospital were announced at Church Point Community Development Corporations’ mid-year open meeting on June 10. Cindy Walters, CEO of Acadia-St. Landry Hospital, said, “We are transforming health care for our community by building a new hospital.

School prep

The opening day for St. Landry Parish public schools is Aug. 8 and it was easy to find custodians at work preparing for that day. At Eunice Junior High School Tyrie Pickney, was pressure-washing the sidewalk at the school near the gymnasium on Tuesday afternoon.

School Board approves budget

The St. Landry Parish School Board approved its budget that includes a $991,000 deficit in the general fund. The 2019-2020 budget was approved at the July 11 meeting with a lone “no” vote by Hazel Sias, an Opelousas Board member. Board member Josh Boudreaux was absent.

Alderwoman repeats plea to bag trash

Alderwoman Germaine Simpson repeated her plea to Eunice residents to bag their trash before placing it in the trash carts. Simpson said at the July 9 city Board meeting that she has been talking about the issue for two years.

Ville Platte armed robbery suspects captured here

Two suspects in an armed robbery involving a home invasion were captured in Eunice. During a traffic stop by Eunice Police and Eunice City Marshal deputies on July 11 on La. 29, Jaylon Thomas was arrested without incident.

Shining light on true abuse in the age of #MeToo

A few years ago, I wrote a column about Malala Yousafzai, around the time the young Pakistani activist was shot in the head by the Taliban. She was targeted for death simply because she wanted to help give girls the same educational opportunities as boys. Instead, Malala survived.
