DeVillier concerned about state government’s growth

Rep. Phillip DeVillier, of Eunice, continues to eye state government’s growth as the fifth special session called by Gov. John Bel Edwards is to begin Monday. The session scheduled through March 7 is to deal with a budget shortfall of up to $1 billion.

Governor’s popularity on the line in budget session

Gov. John Bel Edwards will have to put his personal popularity on the line to rally support for his proposals to close a $1 billion state budget gap if he continues to face resistance from Republican lawmakers, political strategists say. Edwards, the only Democratic governor in the South, on Feb.

City takes another step to clear abandoned properties

Civic Source was approved as the city agent and attorney to sell adjudicated property in Eunice on Wednesday by the Board of Aldermen. The city has about 100 properties where taxes have not been paid, which eventually tags them with the “adjudicated” label. A check at civicsource.

Maple Avenue bridge to reopen

The Maple Avenue bridge may open as early as Feb. 26, according to information given to State Rep. Phillip DeVillier. The bridge at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Bobcat Drive has been closed since January 2017.

Elward James “Jay” Fontenot

Elward James “Jay” Fontenot passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 peacefully at home with his family. He was 85 years old. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 11:00am at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Eunice. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office arrests

The following are arrests reported by the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. Feb. 15 Lindsey Rene Williams, 18, 100 block of Marcel Street, Opelousas. Theft of livestock. Arrested by Leonville Police Dept. Kevin Thomas, 19, 100 block of Tisem Road, Opelousas.

The following are arrests by Eunice Police. Feb. 15 Michael Fontenot, 42, 1800 block of Old Park Road, Ville Platte. Warrants for criminal mischief and unauthorized use of a movable. Krystal Fritz, 33, 800 block of South Beulah, Eunice. Battery on a dating partner. Leroy Freeman Jr.
