St. Landry Parish School Board plans retreat at LSUE on Wednesday

The St. Landry Parish School Board plans a retreat at 4 pm. Wednesday on the Louisiana State University Eunice campus, 2048 Johnson Highway, Eunice.
On the agenda are presentation and discussions on the facility assessment and demographic study.
The meeting will be held at the Acadian Center in Rooms 126 to 128.
The School Board has scheduled a March 24 election on a 11.4-mill, 10-year property tax proposal to raise $7 million annually to fund pay raises; and a a 20-year, 12.4-mill tax to fund a $99 million bond issue for capital improvements.

Mary Leach Werner, an oil and gas executive, will be the commencement speaker at Louisiana State University Eunice’s Fall graduation ceremonies.
Werner will address the nearly 100 summer and fall graduates and their families in LSU Eunice’s Health and Physical Education Center at 10 a.m. Friday.

Blanco to speak at University of Louisiana at Lafayette commencement

UL Lafayette alum and former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco will be guest speaker at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Fall 2017 commencement ceremony on Friday.
Blanco was governor from 2004 to 2008.
The year after she took office, Blanco led the state when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the state.
During her term, she directed the largest investment increase in higher education in state history. Blanco expanded the state’s pre-K program and fully funded Louisiana’s colleges and universities for the first time in 25 years.

EPPJ discusses proposed 2018 budget and a proposed pay raise for its secretary-treasurer

At a special meeting Wednesday night, an abridged Evangeline Parish Police Jury discussed the proposed 2018 budget that includes a $12,000.00 pay raise at 20-percent for Secretary-Treasurer Donald Bergeron which would bring his salary to an estimated $70,000.00.
According to Jury President Ryan Ardoin, “I’m really pleased that most of our expenditures are down. I think the last six to eight years we’ve been working hard to try to get it that way, and I have to give that credit to Donald and his staff. I think he deserves the raise, and he worked hard or it.”

UL Lafayette fall commencement is Dec. 15

Undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees will be conferred during the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Fall 2017 Commencement ceremonies on Dec. 15 at the Cajundome and Convention Center.
The General Assembly will be held at 11 a.m. at the Cajundome. Doctoral candidates will be hooded at this ceremony. Graduating seniors, faculty members and administrators will attend, wearing full academic regalia.
