Basile’s longest serving mayor dies

Berline Boone’s life came to an end on June 20 after an illness that had her on hospice care at her home. Her death gives us time to recall her unselfish lifetime of service to the Basile community and her notable marks on the town’s history.

Smoke testing is complete in Chataignier, leaks are found

Gail McDavid, village administrator of Chataignier, reported, during the council meeting held June 26 that Louisiana Rural Water Association has completed smoke testing the sewer lines and found about 30 different leaks. According to McDavid, there are four leaks that are “pretty bad.

Eunice mayor declares Monday, Tuesday as holidays

Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot has decided that the City of Eunice will follow the State of Louisiana and St. Landry Parish Government and declare Monday to be an administrative holiday. This administrative holiday will pair with the city’s holiday of Tuesday.

Learning outdoor skills

The Eunice Recreation Department held its sixth class to teach archery, fishing, boating and hunting skills to youngsters. Robert Johnson, recreation director, said the class is held once a year and is usually filled to capacity.

Highland Early Learning Center to continue

Highland Early Learning Center will continue operations in the coming school year with classes for pre-kindergarten students. St. Landry Parish Superintendent Milton Batiste III clarified the Eunice school will remain open. The school has been a mix of parish and Head Start classes.

EUNICE–Melvie Joseph Blanchard passed away on June 29, 2023 at the age of 95 in his home in Eunice, Louisiana. He was born on November 23, 1927 in Church Point, Louisiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 3, 2023 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice.
