Lane to close on U.S. 190

The outside lane of U.S. 190 westbound will be closed at the St. Landry/Evangeline Parish line near Eunice on Monday from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting. This closure is necessary to allow crews to remove drift from Bayou des Cannes.

Panel rejects abortion exceptions

A bill that would have added exceptions to Louisiana’s abortion ban for cases of rape and incest was rejected Wednesday by the House Criminal Justice Committee. After hours of emotional testimony on both sides of the issue, lawmakers shot down the measure in a 10-5 vote, marking another blow to Gov.

LSUE Phi Theta Kappa chapter wins national awards

The LSU Eunice chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) recently took home several major honors at the organization’s National Conference, Catalyst 2023, it was recently announced. For a fourth consecutive year, the LSUE chapter was named a “Top 100” chapter in the world.

House fires are the most common disaster in La.

Edward “Ed” Bush, executive director of Capital West Chapter of the American Red Cross, was the guest speaker Wednesday at the Eunice Rotary Club. Bush said, “The Red Cross covers 22 parishes that goes from Baton Rouge over to Lafayette and all the way to Lake Charles.

Batiste is the new school superintendent

The St. Landry Parish School Board voted 12-1 to hire Milton Batiste III as the next school superintendent. The vote at a special meeting on Wednesday was greeted by cheers from the crowd that included his family and former St. Landry Parish School Board co-workers.

Eunice man sentenced to life in prison

A Eunice man, Leonard Miller, was sentenced to life in prison for the April 2022 killing of Clarence Mitchell, also of Eunice. St. Landry Parish District Attorney Chad Pitre announced the sentenced in a news release. The sentenced was delivered on May 9.

Man dies after sucker punch

Stevin Lafleur, 34, of Eunice, died after a sucker punch knocked him to the ground outside a bar in the 200 block of South 2nd Street, said Police Chief Kyle LeBouef. The attack occurred at about 1:40 a.m. May 5.
