On cookbooks and coverings

I want to respond to two things in Jim Bradshaw’s article in today’s paper (3/23): 1. Speaking of old cookbooks, I have my grandmother’s cookbook from about a hundred years ago. I’m guessing at the age, because of my grandmother’s age, but there is no date in the cookbook.

It’s not easy balancing the federal budget

President Trump is trying to reduce federal spending by firing people. That is not likely to be very effective because the payroll is a relatively small part of the federal budget (about 7%).

So call it the Gulf of what?

Our new president has stirred up a hornet’s nest by declaring that we no longer have a Gulf of Mexico. From now on, all government references will be to the Gulf of America. I grew up along the Gulf Coast, spending just about every summer there that I can remember.

Don’t forget Lincoln’s executive order

Your article in today’s paper (Feb. 16) on executive orders failed to mention what is probably the most important one, Lincoln’s order to free the slaves, commonly known as the Emancipation Proclamation.
