Sudden illness ended captain’s career

Hinckley Street and the century-old Hinckley house in the old St. Landry Parish town of Washington are reminders that Oramel Hinckley was one of the most significant steamboat captains in the heyday of Bayou Courtableau.

Crime Lab officials say mission is outgrowing its facility

Acadiana Crime Lab officials said their facility in New Iberia is in need of a major upgrade, but did not ask for any financial help from the St. Landry Parish Council. Kevin Ardoin, lab director, and Chester Cedars, president of the Lab’s commission and St.

Food Farmacy program at Eunice Community Garden

The Eunice Community Garden is kicking off its Food Farmacy program, which will provide fresh, locally-grown vegetables to the needy of our community. The Food Farmacy program is under the Eunice Community Garden and Second Harvest is partnering with Food Farmacy.

Council votes to remove Confederate monument from courthouse grounds

The St. Landry Parish Council voted 9-3 to remove a 102-year-old Confederate monument from the courthouse grounds.

Sheriff office to host concealed permit class The St Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office will host a one day concealed carry permit training class beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at 211 West Park Eunice. The course will be $100 and $80 for a spouse or renewal.

Biden signs Act giving Liberty Annex to city

President Joseph Biden signed the Save the Liberty Theatre Act allowing the transfer of the building’s annex ownership from the National Park Service to the city. U.S. Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., announced the signing on Tuesday. Kennedy introduced the legislation in the Senate and U.S. Rep.
