School Board approves special tax district on 8-4 vote

The St. Landry Parish School Board approved a tax district for the Opelousas High School attendance zone on an 8-4 vote on Monday. The tax district is to narrow the school district’s focus in raising funds for school improvement after voters defeated parish-wide bond proposals this year and in 2018.

Statue to be unveiled at courthouse The Rotary Club of Opelousas was chartered in 1922 and is celebrating its centennial with a project to let everyone know that the namesake of the Parish. St. Landry. was a real person who served as Bishop of Paris from 650 to 661.

Area students are LSU School of Veterinary Medicine grads

The Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine conferred 98 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees in an online ceremony at its 46th annual Veterinary Medicine Commencement on May 16.

JENNINGS — Ajay Patel, owner/operator of Patel McDonald’s and president of Barnam Management, which owns 42 restaurants in Louisiana, South Carolina and Georgia, and his family were recipients of McDonald’s highest honor for a franchisee, the Fred L. Turner Golden Arch Award.

Confederate monument move awaits next site

Moving the Confederate monument on the St. Landry Parish Courthouse grounds is waiting for a site to be selected by the Sons or Daughters of the Confederacy, according to Parish President Jessie Bellard. Lena Charles, of Opelousas, said, “It has been four months and it seems to be delayed.

Is the parish president exceeding his authority?

The St. Landry Parish Council is seeking an attorney general’s opinion on whether the parish president can sign contracts without their approval. Parish President Jessie Bellard contends he does not need the Council’s approval to sign contracts.

Saturday is your chance to dump hazardous waste

St. Landry Parish Solid Waste Disposal District plans its Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday at both of its recycling centers. The Opelousas Recycling Center, located at 2717 W Landry St., in Opelousas, will hold the event from 8 a.m. to noon. The Eunice Recycling Center, located at 450 N. C.

Pro-Life Gala set for June 4 The New Life Pregnancy Center will have its annual Pro-Life Gala to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at the Northside Civic Center in Ville Platte. Tickets are $600 per table of eight.
