St. Landry Parish Catholics advance closer to sainthood

Two St. Landry Parish Catholics, Charlene Richard, Auguste “Nonco” Pelafigue, moved closer to sainthood after a vote by U.S. bishops. Bishop Douglas Deshotel of the Lafayette Diocese, told the story of the two Catholics — one from Richard and the other from Arnaudville — at the meeting in Baltimore.

Eunice Parade of Lights set Dec. 16 The Eunice Parade of Lights (Eunice Christmas Parade) is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16. The route will begin at North 2nd St. near The Flower House and will conclude at Eunice Jr. High School. Every float, trailer will be decked with Christmas lights.

Early childhood education scores high

Legislature addresses reading skills

Literacy training is now required for kindergarten through third grade teachers of reading, math, science and social studies. The requirement, which includes principals and assistant principals, was passed in the 2021 regular session.

Liberty legislation passes committee

U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson, R-Benton, announced that the House Natural Resources Committee’s passed the Save the Liberty Theatre Act — his legislation to give the City of Eunice full ownership of the Liberty Theatre and its annex, so the community can move forward with its restoration efforts.

Fire District 6 puts 2 new trucks into service

Fire District 6, which serves about 8,000 people in a 100-mile area outside Eunice, put two fire trucks into service last week, according to its fire chief, Chaise Brown. The trucks are both 3,000-gallon tanker-pumper trucks.

St. Landry Parish voters backed 2 of the 4 constitutional amendments

St. Landry Parish voters backed two amendments in the election on four constitutional amendments in Saturday’s voting. The only amendment to pass in the state was to lower the maximum allowed rate of income tax and removed a deduction for federal income tax. “The public gave us the green light.
