Mayor: Essential street tax up or renewal

A 5-mill, 10-year property tax for street maintenance is for renewal in an election scheduled Dec. 11. Through Tuesday, 64 people have cast early votes — 42 in person — in the tax election. Early voting began Nov. 27 and ends Saturday.

Eunice High retains A status in state scores

Eunice High School retained its A status in the latest release of school performance scores. The scores may be labeled Simulated School Performance Scores, but they give the public some measure of students and schools fared during a time of virtual and hybrid learning. Eunice High scored 91.

Concerts ring in season

The Christmas season comes to life this week with the Eunice Community Concert Band & Choir performance. On Thursday and Friday, the Eunice Community Concert Band & Choir will present a Christmas Concert “Let The Bells Ring!” at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church.

Parish sales tax collection up 9.8% over last year

St. Landry Parish sales tax collections totaled $78,608,214 in November, up 9.8% or $7,020,609 over the same 11 months in 2020, according to the monthly report released by St. Landry Parish School Board sales tax division. The growth in total sales tax collections slowed from the 11.

‘Christmas with The Chosen’ at ABC The “Christmas With the Chosen, The Messengers” movie will be shown and presented by the Acadian Baptist Center and The Sons of Isschar at the ABC Sanctuary Center, located at 1202 Academy Drive, Eunice, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Tickets are at $12.

‘Mrs. Coach’ named Teacher of the Year at Eunice High

Eunice High School named its Teacher of the Year. Misty Guillory, affectionately known as “Mrs. Coach” by students, faculty and staff, received the honor. Guillory has completed 17 years of teaching and has been on the Eunice High staff since 2009. Guillory is the lead special education teacher.

Did Acadian exiles get last laugh?

In the dead of winter, when snow piles high in Moncton and Shediac and other places in old Acadie, I sometimes think that Governor Charles Lawrence, who plotted their exile, may have done the Acadians a backhanded favor by sending them to warmer climes.
