Senate budget includes teacher pay raises

The Louisiana Senate passed on Thursday in a 35-2 vote a $30 billion state operating budget for next year that includes pay raises for school teachers, across-the-board increases for school districts and a boost for early childhood education.

LSUE chancellor’s pay set

Nancee Sorenson, who has been selected as the next chancellor of LSU Eunice, will be paid $225,000 annually, according to personnel actions on Friday’s LSU Board of Supervisors meeting. Sorenson is also to be paid a $12,000 a year temporary car allowance.

Appellate judges rule on Lawtell derail cases

The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal released decisions on six cases stemming from the Aug. 4, 2013, Union Pacific train derailment at Lawtell. All the cases announced Wednesday were originally heard by Judge Gerard Caswell of the 27th District Court in St. Landry Parish.

Edwards signs anti-abortion bill

Nearly 300 abortion rights demonstrators gathered at the Louisiana State Capitol on Thursday to protest the ‘fetal heartbeat’ anti-abortion bill, which Gov. John Bel Edwards signed into law later that afternoon.
