A Community Update Meeting was held in the Estherwood Elementary auditorium Wednesday night, to give residents who have been hoping for over a decade to replace the Pontoon Bridge on Hwy. 91 a voice to vent their concerns.

The Mangham Police Department pulled over actor/musician Corey Feldman this weekend, leading to drug charges for a number of people. Mangham Police Chief Perry Fleming said Officer Marshall Waters stopped an RV for speeding on HWY 425 in Mangham on Oct. 21.

The stories reporting the death of Father Joseph Brennan characterized him as a “beloved priest” of the Diocese of Lafayette. It is an apt characterization. He was a counselor to saints and a friend to sinners. “He had a real knack for finding the lost sheep,” Father Curtis Mallet said.

Seniors camp with a mission

The Acadian Baptist Center, near Richard, has served as host for Campers on Mission for the past 25 years. Each year, normally in October, the Acadian Baptist Center grounds has many volunteers from all parts of Louisiana pull up in RVs and campers and stay for one week to work.

School employees getting a Christmas bonus

Following a patriotic program to honor veterans serving in the St. Landry Parish school system, the School Board added to the festivities by approving a Christmas bonus for its employees. Full-time employees will receive a $1,000 bonus and substitutes will get $250 in December.

Will the parish be able to save $300,000 next year?

A year ago St. Landry Parish Government faced ending the year with a $670,000 deficit in its general fund. Fast forward to the Nov. 1 Administrative-Finance Committee and Amanda Cain, finance director, declared she wants to save $300,000 in a contingency fund in 2018.

School Board calls tax election

Without comment, the St. Landry Parish School Board voted unanimously to place two tax propositions on the March 24 ballot at its meeting Thursday at the Opelousas Civic Center. There will be an 11.4-mill, 10-year property tax proposal to raise $7 million annually to fund pay raises.

Dorothy Mouton Goudeau

The family of Dorothy Mouton Goudeau, age 87, is greatly saddened to report her death on Thursday November 2, 2017. She died peacefully at home with her family present. Dot, as she was affectionately known, was quite a lady. All important to her were her God, her family and her friends.
