Alert desk clerk spotted secretive actress

It was the talk of the town when the movie star Elissa Landi was spotted in Crowley on Feb. 3. 1936. She was trying to travel incognito and registered at the Egan Hotel as Mrs. Elizabeth Lawrence, That didn’t work. Mary Amelia Egan, the sharp-eyed desk clerk, recognized her.

Tips sought in theft, burning of vehicle

Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating the theft of a vehicle on Jan. 18 in the 400 block of Maggie Lane near Church Point. A 2022 Toyota Tundra, gray in color, was discovered missing from the residence during the early morning hours.

Substitute teachers voted a pay raise

Substitute certified teachers in the St. Landry Parish public schools will get a raise from $70 to $90 a day. The School Board approved the raise unanimously at its meeting on Thursday.

The flood that didn’t happen

This is the story that is a bit late, but needs to be told anyway. The clouds on Jan. 24 emptied flooding rain on most of St. Landry Parish. Many areas of the parish flooded and in particular, U.S. 190 on the west end of Opelousas became more of stream than a road.

3rd suspect to fatal Corn St. shooting arrested

A third suspect in a fatal shooting on Corn Street on Dec. 15 was arrested in Lafayette, according to Eunice Police Chief Kyle LeBouef. The suspect, Trevon Lee Jones, 20, of Eunice, is the son of suspect Aaron Jones, who was found dead of an apparent suicide on Dec. 20.
