Lafayette vet harvests 696-pound La. black bear

Deron Santiny grew up in Louisiana hunting and fishing and thought he had seen just about everything. That is until he witnessed a 696-pound male Louisiana black bear come sauntering out of the Tensas Parish woods not far from where he was housed in a deer stand.

Hunters asked to assist LDWF chronic wasting surveillance

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is asking state deer hunters for assistance in surveillance for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in connection with a deer at a captive deer farm which tested positive for the disease in Jeff Davis Parish on Nov. 7.

State opens inaugural black bear season with 10 tags

Saturday marked the beginning of Louisiana’s new black bear hunting season, but it will probably be a while before the sport is accessible to more than a select few hunters and landowners. Gov. Jeff Landry announced the opening of the season, which will last through Dec.

Fewer fish spills reported after Louisiana pushes pogy boats from coast

In 2022, a menhaden fishing ship and its net boats spilled about a million fish off the Louisiana coast, leaving the floating mass to rot in the summer sun. A few months later, another spill blanketed Louisiana beaches with an estimated 850,000 dead fish.

Coast Guard honors LDWF agent

Louisiana dove hunting season underway

The 2024 dove hunting season began Sept. 7 statewide, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced. Louisiana is divided into the North and South zones for dove season. The North Zone runs from Sept. 7-28, Oct. 5-Nov. 9 and Dec. 21-Jan. 21, 2025.
