Lady Jays roll in shutout win

St. Edmund remained undefeated with a 11-0 mercy-rule win over Lacassine Monday at Lady Jay Field. Karleigh Soileau threw a no hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk. Soileau retired the first 13 batters before Taylor Talbot drew a walk with two outs in the fifth inning.

The Bobcats edged past Iota 102-100 as Eunice won their season opening track meet. Crowley finished third with 92 points, followed by Pine Prairie (83), Mamou (41), Opelousas Catholic (27) and St. Edmund (8). Eunice High’s Jesten Calloway captured the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.87.

LSU suspends two athletic officials for mishandling of sexual assault

Two LSU Athletics employees were suspended without pay after a law firm’s report into LSU’s alleged mishandling of sexual assault complaints was released Friday. Scott Schneider, a representative from the law firm, Husch Blackwell, presented the investigation to the LSU Board of Supervisors.

Lady Cats cruise in Oakdale tourney

The Eunice Lady Bobcats improved to 4-1 on the season with three wins in the Oakdale softball tournament. Eunice 12, Jennings 1 Caroline Vienne earned the win as she went five innings, allowing one run on six hits, striking out seven and didn’t give up a walk.

Eunice youth baseball, softball registration extended

Registration for the Eunice Recreation baseball & softball season has been extended to March 7. Registration is available at eunicerec.com. Registration is $60 per child. Robert Johnson, recreation director, stated there is nearly enough players for the 12U and 14U baseball and softball leagues.

Spring training and the grapefruit nickname

Baseball fans got good news earlier this month — or at least as good can be expected during COVID-19. Major League Baseball approved a plan to go forward with Spring Training, also known as the Grapefruit League.
