March for Life walk set for Jan. 22 The public is invited on Sunday, Jan. 22 for the annual Pro-Life Walk in Eunice. The walk will begin at noon at North 2nd near Picou’s Drug Store, and conclude at the City Hall parking lot, with a short program and speaker.

Arbor Day celebration is Jan. 21 at Louisiana State Arboretum

Celebrate Louisiana’s Arbor Day with a day full of activities and free tree seedlings at the Louisiana State Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 21. The tree seedling give-a-way will begin after the opening ceremony at 10 am.

Metal detectors protect public

Eunice City Marshal Terry Darbonne called donors together at the Eunice City Court to thank them for making possible metal detectors used at school sports events and other uses.

Habitat loss turns some wildlife into nuisances

From black bears feeding on leftover pizza, coyotes preying on pets and feral hogs tearing up levees, animals and humans often find themselves conflict. Sometimes, as in the case of wild hogs, the once domesticated animals almost defy control.

Concealed carry permit class Saturday The St Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office will host a one-day concealed carry permit training class beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at 211 W. Park Ave. in Eunice. The course is $100 and $80 for a spouse or renewal.

Opelousas General Health System and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center on Monday celebrated the completion of an agreement to expand and enhance cancer care resources in the Greater Opelousas area, effective immediately.

Kennedy retires as deputy police chief

Retiring Eunice Police Deputy Chief Tony Kennedy was recognized on his retirement at the Board of Aldermen meeting on Tuesday. Kennedy served as deputy chief since 2020 and retired effective Jan. 3. “It has been a pleasure working here for all these years.

Parish sales tax collections top $90M in 2022

St. Landry Parish sales tax collections rose to $90,142,152 in 2022, up 5.2% from collections in 2021. But there were signs sales tax revenue is slowing. In December, collections totaled $6,787,545, down 11.4% or $874,178 from November’s total of $7,661,723. The December collection total was down 3.

MLK celebration is Jan. 15 The 36th Martin Luther King Jr. City-Wide Celebration is scheduled Jan. 15. The theme is “Together We Can Be the Dream” and guest speaker is Bishop Brian K. Stevens, of Abbeville. A parade is to start at 2 p.m. with assembly at the Eunice City Hall parking lot.
