By Harlan Kirgan Editor Outgoing Police Chief Randy Fontenot stressed police officers need better pay in his final session at a regular Board of Aldermen meeting. “I have no applications to review. We don’t have anybody applying for these positions at this point,” he said.

Confederate monument stands fast

By Harlan Kirgan Editor Despite the St. Landry Parish Council voting 9-3 in April to move a monument to Confederate soldiers off the Courthouse grounds, the 102-year-old structure remains in place.

Schools closing due to weather

The St Landry Parish public schools will close Wednesday due to anticipated severe weather. Also closing is the LSUE campus. LSUE and the parish campuses are to reopen on Thursday. LSUE is holdings fall commencement ceremony at 10 a.m Friday.

Sandbags available in St. Landry Parish

St. Landry Parish Government will issue sandbags Tuesdayfor any parish resident who might need them. Due to possible severe weather and chance of flooding Tuesday and into Wednesday, the parish government is making the bags available at the Yambilee Building at 1939 W. Landry (U.S.

Simpson wins reelection to Board seat

Germaine Simpson won reelection to the Ward 2 Board of Aldermen set in a runoff election on Saturday. Simpson won her fourth term with 54% of the 388 votes cast. Challenger Jacqueline “JuJu” Vallare won 180 votes. Turnout, according statistics at the secretary of state’s website, geauxvote.

Players’ Theatre general membership meeting set The Eunice Players’ Theatre general membership meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the theater, located at 121 South 2nd. All season ticket holders are invited to attend.

Illegal gambling has invaded LSU!

Gambling is everywhere in Louisiana. Presently, the state has 15 so-called “floating” casinos, a huge land-based casino in downtown New Orleans, four racetrack casinos, 200 truck stop casinos and over 1,000 restaurants and bars that have video poker machines. Wow!

Public hearing set on city pay raises

A public hearing is scheduled at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday before the Eunice Board of Aldermen meeting to hear comments on pay raises for elected officials. The pay raise ordinance was introduced at November’s Board meeting.

Solar farm planned in parish

A meeting to provide information about proposed solar farm north of Leonville is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Yambilee Building, 1939 W. Landry St., Opelousas.
