Free LSUE Ag program offers career paths

A new LSUE program, Sustaining Future Farmers in Louisiana, offers a free path to multiple careers. Not only is the program free, participants who complete the six-month course will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship to LSUE’s new associate of science in agriculture degree program.

Players’ Theatre general membership meeting set The Eunice Players’ Theatre general membership meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the theater, located at 121 South 2nd. All season ticket holders are invited to attend.

Voters to settle Eunice election Saturday

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in an election that will settle the composition of the Eunice Board of Aldermen. Early voting for all of St. Landry Parish ended Dec. 3 with 2,412 votes cast. There 1,592 votes cast in person and 820 absentees.

Parish K-3 reading scores below state benchmark

St. Landry Parish public school kindergarten through third grade students scored below benchmark in a reading screen given during the first 30 days of the current school year. The Louisiana Department of Education released its Fall 2022 Reading Report on December 1.

Teacher, coach, writer John Burson dies

Teacher, coach and sportswriter John Burson died on Monday at the age of 73. Burson spent 41 years teaching and coaching at Eunice High School. Along the way, he covered sports for The Eunice News. His byline appeared for 42 years in this newspaper until he retired in 2019.

Concerts celebrate Christmas

Concerts today and Friday by the Eunice Community Concert Band & Choir celebrate Christmas. The “Season of Joy” concerts are scheduled at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Eunice.

Thrive Summit set Thursday in Opelousas The public is invited to the Accelerate St. Landry Parish Thrive Summit from 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Opelousas Civic Center located at 1638 Creswell Lane in Opelousas.
LSU Eunice student Jacie Bernard recently completed an internship program with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), it was announced last week.  Bernard received a certificate of completion by the LDWF. The Washington native and LSUE Criminal Justice major, was one of students statewide to complete the internship this fall. The 15-week program exposes interns to various facets of a career as a conservation law enforcement officer.  Students participate in hunting and fishing regulatory
