Huguets honored as St. Landry Parish Leaders in Philanthropy Award recipients

Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA) and Hancock Whitney Bank are announced the 2022 Leaders in Philanthropy Award honorees for St. Landry Parish are Peggy and the late Dr. Albert Huguet. Peggy and Dr. Albert Huguet both grew up rural St. Landry Parish.

Tri-Parish jobless rates down

Tri-Parish unemployment rates are down compared to a year ago and the workforce is nearly unchanged, according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission. The Tri-Parish workforce — people working and those looking for a job — totaled 67,279 in August, the latest job number released by the Commission.

Burn ban declared for St. Landry Parish

St. Landry Parish Government has issued a burn ban in the parish effective today. The ban includes anything with an open flame that produces an ember. The wind can carry floating embers away from the original fire and start a spot fire.

Cajun Indians are part of Mowata story

Several weeks ago, I reported the oft-told story that the Mowata community in Acadia Parish got its name because nobody could find a board long enough to print the original name of Morewater. I have long suspected that the story was suspect, but had never heard anything to contradict it.
