Acadia Parish Police Jury considers surveillance cameras

The Acadia Parish Police Jury will consider installing a couple of surveillance cameras just west of the Crowley city limits. Walter Andrus, chairman of the jury’s Legislative Committee, reported Tuesday night that two sites are being recommended for camera installation.

A marathon series of committee meetings ended in a physical altercation between two members of the Crowley City Council here Wednesday night. Police officers intervened to separate Jeff Cavell and Brad Core following adjournment of the final committee meeting.

The St. Landry Parish School Board scheduled a public hearing at its July 1 meeting on three tax proposals that would provide employee pay raises and facility improvements. The Board was unanimous in proceeding with the proposals at its meeting Thursday.

City budget to include employee pay raises

Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot said the budget he will present at Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting will include a $1 an hour raise for city employees. The raise is the first “substantial” increase for the employees in 12 years, he said at Thursday’s meeting to set the agenda for the meeting.

SLEMCO cancels annual meeting at Cajundome

SLEMCO has canceled its 84th annual meeting that was scheduled June 12 due to continuing public health concerns related to Covid-19. The annual scholarship drawing is not canceled and was held live on Tuesday on SLEMCO’s Facebook page.

Zydeco Capital Jam returns to I-49 Parish Visitor Center

After a 14-month absence, the Zydeco Capital Jam returns from 1 to 3 p.m. June 12 at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center, I-49 exit 23, in Opelousas. Accordion legend Jeffery Broussard, of Zydeco Force and Creole Cowboys fame, will lead the jam, open to all players and fans.
