CCA chief stresses importance of fishing

Fishermen know the importance of their sport and often that centers on fun, but a serious side of saltwater angling was discussed by the executive director of the Coastal Conservation Association Louisiana. David Cresson spoke Wednesday at the Eunice Rotary Club meeting.

Evangeline farmer recognized as Rice Farmer of the Year

Steve Linscombe of the LSU AgCenter received the Rice Industry Award at the 2016 USA Rice Outlook Conference recently (Dec.7-9) for his work as rice breeder and director of the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station. Richard Fontenot of Evangeline Parish was recognized as Rice Farmer of the Year.

Blue star is shining again

The blue star at the towering building between East Street and La. 13 is back. What was thought to be missing some 30 or 40 years ago from a rice dryer is now shining brightly on another rice dryer.

Sales tax revenues decline

Sales tax revenues in Eunice and the total for St. Landry Parish declined in November by several measures. Eunice sales tax revenues from January to November totaled $4,823,023, which is 0.7 percent or $31,733 below the same period in 2015, according to the St.

Eunice native, LSUE grad Burney to speak at commencement

Pete Burney, an LSU Eunice graduate and retired vice president at Hallmark Cards, will be the commencement speaker when Louisiana State University Eunice holds fall graduation ceremonies at 10 a.m. Friday in the gymnasium of the Health and Physical Education Building.

Former LSUE accountant hired to help parish finances

A former accountant at LSUE, Amanda Cain, has been hired to guide St. Landry Parish Government through a fiscal crisis.  Cain’s hiring was announced Wednesday by Parish President Bill Fontenot at an Administrative-Finance Committee meeting.

Tax plan aims to rebuild city roads, provide pay raises

City voters may be asked to double their property tax for 15 years and rededicate a sales tax to rebuild city streets and provide pay raises for city employees.  Two items are on the agenda for Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
