Acadia Parish Police Jury to consider cutting library board numbers

The Legislative Committee of the Acadia Parish Police Jury was busy this week, handling issues ranging from library board quorums to surveillance cameras to subdivision regulations. All recommendation of the committee will be forwarded to the full jury to be considered at the Tuesday meeting.

Parish president vacates two administrative positions

St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard had vacated the public works and airport director jobs. “I don’t want to wait on anything,” he said in explaining the move. The St. Landry Parish Council voted Bellard in as parish president in August. A special election will be held in March for the seat.

Mayor to recommend trick-or-treat hours

Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot said he will recommend that trick-or-treat hours be from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29. The Halloween celebration on 2nd Street will be postponed until next year because of social distancing requirements, he said.

Musician Joel Savoy is to present a proposal at Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting for a non-profit to revive the Liberty Theater. Savoy spoke at Thursday’s meeting where the mayor and Board set the agenda for the meeting scheduled at 6:30 p.m. in the Eunice Municipal Complex.

Hospital cleanup faces hurdles

St. Landry Parish Council members weighed in on the demolition of the old Moosa Hospital by adding a few hurdles. Parish President Jessie Bellard said he met with officials from the city and hospital district about the old hospital. “It needs to be torn down, but it is full of asbestos.

Hurricane Delta is continuing to weaken very slowly. We just had a wind gust of 94 mph here in Lake Charles. Winds should start decreasing along and south of the I-10 corridor in the next 2 to 4 hours, but will be increasing in parts of central Louisiana still.

6 p.m. National Weather Service update

Hurricane Delta is moving ashore in Cameron and Vermilion Parishes this evening. Hurricane force winds are seen in those regions, as well as parts of southeast Texas and Calcasieu and Jeff Davis Parishes. Tides are now falling in Sabine Pass, so the storm surge warning is ending there.
