COA millage fails

A proposal to levy a 1.75 mills, 10-year property tax that would generate funds to operate the St. Martin Council on Aging failed to gain approval in light voting last Saturday. The proposal, which would have generated about $680,000 per year, was voted down by a 1,838 to 1,685 vote margin.

Unemployment rate declines for fifth consecutive month

September’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased to 5.1 percent. This figure is down 0.1 percentage points from August. This is the fifth consecutive month the unemployment rate has declined. The last time the unemployment rate was 5.1 percent was August 2008.

Concealed handgun classes offered Non-profit classes for a concealed handgun permit are scheduled Oct. 28, Nov. 11 and Dec. 9 at the Masonic Lodge, 211 W. Park Ave., Eunice, according to an announcement from Maj. Eddie Thibodeaux of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.

‘Relentless boosterism’ well done

Susan Evangeline Walker Anding, was a leader in the woman’s suffrage movement who wanted more than just a vote. She also demanded a voice in public affairs, which she got and used well.
