Honoring former Erath police chief

<p>A special ceremony was held a year later to the date of the death of Erath Chief Police Gerald Hebert.<br /> Hebert died on Sept. 20, 2016 after a battle with cancer. He was 59 years old. Hebert was chief for nine years.

Senator: State budget is in critical condition

Three-term District 25 State Sen. Dan ‘Blade’ Morrish, R-Jennings, told the Crowley Lions Club on Tuesday the state’s government’s situation is critical. Morrish is in his final term as a state senator. He ran unopposed in the last election and has served in the state’s legislature for 21 years.

Abbeville Council keeps moving forward with work at new park

<p>While the finished product remains at least a couple of years away, the City of Abbeville is taking steps to develop Lafitte Drive-in Park.<br /> The Abbeville City Council approved a plan in June to turn about 15 acres that used to be the site of the drive-in into a city park.

City seeking options for old Opera House

<p> The city has begun looking for ideas to eliminate the ongoing expense of owning the 1830-vintage Duchamp Opera House. At the September 18 city council meeting, Dist.1 councilman Mike Fuselier said the time has come to rethink the city’s involvement with the historic building.

Basketball team recognized

Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot presented certificates to the coaches of the Tri-Parish Elite AAU basketball team that won awards in Florida. Coaches are Paul Hebert, accepting a certificate, and Vondray Vallare. The presentation was made a the Sept. 12 meeting of the Board of Aldermen and mayor.

Sherry Belton Sam passed away on Wednesday September 20, 2017, at the age of 57. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday , September 27,2017, at 11:00 AM. at St. Augustine Catholic Church with burial to follow at Assumption Cemetery in Basile. Fr. Kennon Brown will officiate.
