Zydeco festival moving to the Yambilee Festival grounds

Opelousas will host the 35th annual Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival on Sept. 2. The festival will be held at the Yambilee Festival grounds, an indoor facility located at 1939 W. Landry St. The gate opens at 11 a.m. Music begins at noon.

Rotary golf tourney set for Aug. 12 The Eunice Rotary Club will hold a golf tournament Aug. 12 at Koasati Pines at Coushatta Casino in Kinder. The cost is $100 per player or $400 a team. All proceeds goes to the Eunice Community Health Center. Registration and payment deadline is Aug. 10.

State sales tax discount in effect Friday, Saturday

Back-to-school supplies, electronics, appliances and most other retail purchases are subject to reduced sales tax during the 2017 Louisiana Annual Sales Tax Holiday Friday and Saturday.

Kayak races for kids Saturday

Petit Tour du Teche, youth races in Bayou Teche, will be held at Parc des Ponts de Pont Breaux on Saturday,. Ranging from 250 yards to a mile in length, the races are staged around buoys so that the racers are within view of the park at all times.

Gang war sparks crime spree

Eunice Police say a war between the Eunice street gang, Goons for Life, and their Ville Platte counterparts, Cross Town Mafia, sparked a crime spree from May through July. Police had two starting points for the crime spree that involved shootings, vehicle thefts and burglaries.

Higgins is facing opposition

While it might be a while until we start hearing more chatter about 2018’s congressional races, speculation is already stirring in the 3rd Congressional District. That’s where freshman Congressman Clay Higgins of Port Barre may face some opposition.
