A change of mind about homeschooling?

I realize such headgear has fallen out of style in our self-esteem-obsessed culture, but maybe I should belatedly don a dunce cap. You see, one of my first columns (nearly 25 years ago) was a snarky dismissal of the nascent homeschooling movement.

Paying attention pays off

Declining attention spans have reached epidemic levels. That’s what Adam Brown, co-director of the Center for Attention, Learning and Memory at St. Bonaventure University in New York, tells Time. That’s certainly the case with me.

Fête Dieu du Têche celebrated with start in Franklin

The ninth annual Fête Dieu du Têche held on Tuesday drew thousands of Roman Catholics from around South Louisiana and beyond to celebrate their faith, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the arrival of the Acadians in Louisiana after their exile from Canada.

NOAA ups hurricane forecast

Scientists at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center — a division of the National Weather Service — have increased their prediction for the ongoing 2023 Atlantic hurricane season from a near-normal level of activity to an above-normal level of activity with an August update.

6 of 13 Parish Council seats contested

Six of 13 St. Landry Parish Council seats are contested in the Oct. 14 election. At Wednesday’s meeting, the uncertainty about the District 13 position left vacant by the resignation of Coby Clavier was settled until the election with the appointment of Lynn Lejeune.

Lejeune selected for interim St. Landry Parish Council seat

Former Eunice Mayor Lynn Lejeune won the interim District 13 St. Landry Parish Council seat on a 7-4 vote at Wednesday’s meeting. Lejeune and Darrell Huckaby, an Army retiree and reserve Eunice Police officer, were in the running for the position vacated by Coby Clavier.
