Distracted driving is a serious problem on Louisiana roads, with more than 5,000 crashes featuring injuries or fatalities occurring annually by drivers who are distracted by a passenger, something outside the vehicle, or a hand-held phone.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a Turkey Creek man for alleged turkey hunting violations on March 25 in Evangeline Parish. Agents cited Darwin W. Nelson, 43, for hunting turkey over a baited area and contributing the delinquency of a juvenile.

Antique tractor stolen from Palmetto area field

St. Landry Crime Stoppers needs help in solving a theft of farm equipment in the Palmetto area. During the afternoon hours on April 1, the property owner arrived at 1434 Highway 360 and noticed that his antique 1955 John Deere 40-V tractor was missing from the field behind the barn.

Teachers’ Retirement pays $83M in Tri-Parish

The Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana (TRSL) reports Tri-Parish retirement dollars paid in 2022 totaled $83,365,094. Tri-Parish recipients averaged $25,690 per year. TRSL reports paying $630 million in retirement income to retirees and beneficiaries in Acadiana.

Tri-Parish workforce down 0.5%

The Tri-Parish workforce in February was down 312 people or 0.5% compared to a year ago in February, according to Louisiana Workforce Commission statistics released Tuesday. The report also shows Tri-Parish unemployment rates are holding steady.

Eunice pet owner cited for cruelty to animals

A citizen contacted the Humane Society of Louisiana (HSLA) on March 18 to report that a puppy was being mistreated in of Eunice. The citizen sent HSLA a photo of a chocolate pit bull puppy chained and sitting in a puddle.

Vet Fest grows

About 100 people attended Vet Fest at LSUE on Saturday where a two-hour symposium was loaded with information for veterans and their families. John Hamlin, vice chancellor of Academic Affairs and provost at LSUE, welcomed the participants and attendees.
