College’s bid to erase its flawed founder is insulting

I was thrilled when I received an acceptance letter from Bryn Mawr College. Bryn Mawr was dedicated to educating women at the same level as many of the Ivy League institutions, like Harvard and Yale, many of which did not admit women in 1885 when the school was co-founded by M. Carey Thomas.

Is Congress taking over local school boards?

School board elections in Louisiana used to be rather sleepy affairs, with generally a small turnout on election day. Yes, there were often controversial issues considered by local boards.

VFW celebrates Don Reber’s tenure as state commander

Veterans of Foreign War leaders and members from Louisiana celebrated Don Reber’s tenure as state commander at a weekend celebration at Eunice Post 8971. The Commander Homecoming and Testimonial occurs at the commander’s home post.

Eunice curfew may be working

The curfew for adults in Eunice is apparently working, Police Chief Kyle Lebouef said. The 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew was announced effective March 23. “I’ve not seen as many minors out there walking or hanging out on the street,” he said on Tuesday.

Opelousas woman charged with 29 counts of identity theft

A 35-year-old Opelousas woman was arrested Monday and charged with 29 counts of identity theft related to Medicaid payment, according to a Sheriff Bobby Guidroz in a news release. Jessica Marie Guillory, of the 600 block of Fontenot Road, was arrested on Tuesday.

Former town clerk in Washington charged

A former Town of Washington employee has been charged with theft and malfeasance in office over traffic citations. Erica Shauntrell Zacharie, 38, of the 100 block of Garnet Drive, Opelousas, turned herself in at the St. Landry Parish Jail and booked on the warrant issued for her arrest.
