Driver dies after single-vehicle crash in St. Landry Parish

A single-vehicle crash on La. 103 at the intersection of Church Road in St. Landry Parish claimed the life of 59-year-old Philip Gilyard of Leonville, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police Troop I. Police were notified of the crash at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Church Point hospital CEO addresses rumors

New Acadia St. Landry Hospital CEO Micheal LeJeune spoke about his plans as head of the facility during the hospital board’s regular August meeting recently. “Tomorrow already makes five weeks that I have been at this facility, and it just seems like time is flying by,” LeJeune said.

SUV hit by 4 bullets

A black Ford Escape was hit by four .40-caliber bullets in a shooting reported at 12:53 p.m. Sunday, The 18-year-old driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries believed to have been inflicted by broken glass when the windshield was struck, Eunice Police Lt. Jeremy Ivory said.

La. 1165 roadwork planned

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced that beginning Sept. 14, construction will begin on a $4.4 million project that will include a 3.8-mile section of La. 1165 from La. 29 to La. 104.

Schools to stress attendance

St. Landry Parish’s public school truancy rate in 2020-2021 was 49.19% — higher than the state’s 40.21% rate. Truancy is defined as students who have five tardies or five unexcused absences in a semester. In the 2020-2021 school year there were 6,559 truancy cases in the school district.
