5-1A All-District team released

Catholic High of Pointe Coupee advanced to the Division IV state championship game and the Hornets captured top honors in District 5-1A.
The Hornets went 5-0 in district to slip past Opelousas Catholic and St. Edmund for the title.
No. 7 Catholic–PC opened the playoffs with a 28-7 win over No. 10 Cedar Creek before a 13-0 upset over No. 2 Opelousas Catholic.
The Hornets grabbed a 21-8 win over No. 6 Southern Lab to advance to the Division IV state title game against No. 5 Ouachita Christian in the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

Parish tournament starts today

LEBEAU – The annual St. Landry Parish basketball tournament tips off today at North Central.
The No. 2 seed Northwest Raiders face No. 7 Port Barre Red Devils at 2:30 p.m.
The No. 4 Eunice Lady Bobcats will take on No. 6 Port Barre at 4 p.m.
“We should gain much needed playing experience,” Eunice High Lady Bobcats head coach Wayne Fontenot said. “The more court time these girls get, the better we will get.
“With several injuries we were forced to move some players into postitions they were probably a year a way of being ready in,” the coach said.

Marcantel to play in All-Star game

ALEXANDRIA – The star and his coach will be together one last time on the football field at the second-annual Louisiana Gridiron Football All-Star Game.
Well not exactly together – as Blue Jay senior Peyton Marcantel was selected to play for the Red team and St. Edmund head coach James Shiver will be an assistant for the Blue team.
“It is fun to coach in this kind of game because all of the players are heading to play in college somewhere,” Shiver said. “These are some of the best players from across the state.”

Rivals Blue Jays, Basile split games

St. Edmund and Basile split games Tuesday as the two rivals faced off in non-district battles.

In the boys action, the St. Edmund Blue Jays exploded for 21 points in the first quarter as St. Ed’s earned a 66-42 win.
Basile’s Keeman Ivory scored the game’s first three points, but the Jays answered with a 15-1 run.
Travis Mondares hit a trey for the Bearcats with two minutes left in the period, but the Blue Jays closed the quarter with a 6-2 run for a 21-9 advantage.
Henry Brown led the Jays with eight points in the first period.

Eunice places 16 on 4-4A All-District list

The Bobcats finished as co-champions in their first season back in District 4-4A and Eunice placed 16 players on the All-District lists.
Eunice finished the season 9-3 overall, 3-1 in district.
The No. 9 Bobcats opened the playoffs with a 35-27 win over No. 24 Plaquemine before falling in a 8-7 heartbreaker at No. 8 Bastrop.
District co-champions No. 21 Rayne (6-5, 3-1) lost in the opening round to No. 12 Northwood Shreveport, 7-6.
North Vermilion went 5-6 overall, 2-2 in district as the No. 25 Patriots lost to Bastrop 56-14 in the first round.
