Jamborees kick off season

Thursday night, the lights will turn on and the fans will fill stadiums all around the area ina a preview of the high school footbal season.
The threat of stormy weather has forced the change for the fifth-annual Joe Nagata Memorial jamboree.
Originally set for Friday, the games will held tonight at Eunice High.
The St. Edmund Blue Jays will face long-time rival Sacred Heart of Ville Platte at 6:30 p.m.
Eunice High will entertain the Iota Bulldogs in the finale.

Nagata jamboree to honor Fuselier

The Joe Nagata Memorial football jamboree was spearheaded by Tony Fuselier who served as jamboree chairman with its first games played in August 2013.
Fuselier died at age 64 on April 14, 2017 and the jamboree board will honor his memory Friday night at Eunice High School.
Eunice High booster club president Roger Pedigo said the legacy that Fuselier left is immense.
“This year we are dedicating the jamboree to Tony,” Pedigo said. “It was his dream to see the Joe Nagata jamboree happen.

Kaplan runs past Bobcats

The Kaplan High Pirates used an impressive rushing attack against the Eunice High Bobcats in a football scrimmage played Thursday at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats opened the varsity portion of the scrimmage using a mix of run and pass against the Kaplan defense to move down the field before quarterback Jaydon Brasseaux found junior receiver Jordan open down the field.
Ledet pulled in the pass and finished the 50-yard pass play for a touchdown, according to unofficial stats.

Bearcats ready to rebound

BASILE – No one in Bearcat country was happy with Basile’s 3-8 finish last football season.
The Bearcats had three straight quarterfinal appearances were 31-5 from 2013 to 2015.
Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand is entering his fourth season with the Bearcats and is confident his team will win again.
“There were four games last year that we lost that we should have won,” he said.
“We had a chance to win at the end and just couldn’t get it done,” Bertrand said. “We talked about it all summer long and that was motivation for them.

Parish coaches join to talk football

OPELOUSAS – The annual gathering of St. Landry Parish coaches means that football season is right around the corner.
The South Park Teen Center was filled Tuesday night with coaches and local supporters to speak about their chances for a successful football season and to promote the 21st annual St. Landry Parish public school jamboree.
The jamboree will be held Aug. 25 at Donald Garder Stadium in Opelousas.
Eunice and North Central will begin at 6 p.m.
Port Barre will face Beau Chene at 7:15 p.m., while OHS and Northwest conclude the jamboree at 8:45 p.m.
