Lady Cats down Beau Chene, Bobcats fall to Northwest

PORT BARRE – The Eunice High Lady Bobcats opened play in the St. Landry Parish Basketball Tournament Thursday night and came away with a 57-43 victory over the Beau Chene Lady Gators.
The Lady Cats took a 12-9 lead after one quarter, with Shania Toussaint and Stacie White scoring four points apiece to lead the scoring.
Eunice High would extend its lead early in the second quarter.
White would drive for a basket at the start of the quarter, then steal a pass and go to the free-throw line when she was fouled driving to the basket.

Notre Dame sweeps Jays

It wasn’t the way St. Edmund wanted its first home games to go as Notre Dame rolled to a sweep Tuesday night at the Blue Jays gym.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 16-4 first quarter advamtage as the Lady Pioneers grabbed a 42-33 win over the Lady Jays.
Camille Leger scored three points for SEH in the quarter, while Maggie Larriviere added a free throw.
Abbey Higginbotham and Leeann Gray both scored five points for the Lady Pios.
Trailing by 12 points heading into the second quarter, St. Edmund rallied for an 11-8 run to close the gap to 24-15 at intermission.

Granger named Lady Jay softball coach

With just a month before their first softball practice, Megan Granger has been named the newest St. Edmund Lady Jay head softball coach.
But she has been thrown into the fire before, being named interim head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette after the sudden resignation of head coach Michael Lotief the day before the 2013 softball season began.
“I don’t crumble under pressure,” she said. “If anything out of the ordinary happens I think I am ready for it as I have proved that in the past.”

Parish tourney tips off Thursday

PORT BARRE – The Beau Chene Gators and the North Central Lady Hurricanes are the top seeds heading into the annual St. Landry Parish basketball tournament that begins Thursday at Port Barre.
The Gators (7-0) won the parish title two years ago, while the Lady Hurricanes (8-3) have captured five straight parish titles.
Port Barre will host four first round games Thursday before the tournament moves to Northwest High for the final two nights.
The girls consolation game is 2:30 p.m. Saturday with the finals set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Lady Jays grab OT win

DERIDDER – St. Edmund outscored East Beauregard 6-1 in the extra period as the Lady Jays grabbed a 47-42 overtime win.
Gabby Fontenot pushed four points and Allison Lafleur added two free throws to help seal the Lady Jay win.
The Lady Jays jumped out to a 10-3 first quarter lead, sparked by four points from Maggie Larriviere.
Abby Miller, Fontenot and Camille Leger added buckets in the first period for the Lady Jays.
The second quarter was a battle as St. Edmund outscored East Beauregard, 11-9.
