Salvinia control efforts helped, hurt by winter’s severe cold

By Craig Gautreaux, cgautreaux@agcenter.lsu.edu STEPHENSVILLE — A severe winter in Louisiana caused much of the giant salvinia in the state to die off, especially in the northern part of the state. However, the weather caused a drastic reduction of a weevil being used to control salvinia.

Business Garden of the Month chosen

Northside Veterinary Hospital, owned by Dr. Tim Deshotel and Amy Deshotel, received the Business Yard of the Month by the Bulb & Blossom Garden Club of Eunice. The business, located at 440 Hwy. 13 South, features magnolias, sasanqua, flax lilies, vincas, coleus and Indian Hawthorn.

VFW and Auxiliary Post awards scholarship

The VFW Department of Louisiana, Auxiliary awards one Borel Continuing Education scholarship each school year in the amount of $1,000. The Doucet-Aucoin VFW Post & Auxiliary announced that their entry, Tori Vidrine, is this years’ winner.

Troy LeJeune at Liberty Saturday

The “Rendez-vous des Cajuns” Cajun Music Radio & TV show Saturday at the Liberty Center at 6 p.m. will have a performance by Troy LeJeune & Cajun Revue. Show starts at 6 p.m. The Liberty opens at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, and children ages 7 to 12 are $3.

Louisiana 4-H’ers place in regional horse show

By Olivia McClure, omcclure@agcenter.lsu.edu BATON ROUGE — Several Louisiana 4-H members brought home awards from a recent regional horse show. They were among 4-H’ers from 13 states who participated in the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Show, held Aug. 1 to 5 in Perry, Georgia.

Birth Announcements

Alaysia Robinson Lonnie Robinson and Uniquewa Mouton announce the birth of their daughter, Alaysia Madalyn Elise Robinson, born at Acadian Medical Center on July 31 weighing 5 pounds and 11.8 ounces. Maternal grandmother is Mary W. Chachere. Paternal grandparents are Tarzan Wheeler and Debra Mouton.
