It’s time to plant late-summer vegetable gardens

By Dan Gill LSU AgCenter Horticulturist August is a transitional time in the vegetable garden. While cool-season planting begins in earnest next month, some of the more heat-tolerant cool-season vegetables, such as the cole crops, can be planted into the garden now.

Terry and The Zydeco Bad Boys at Liberty Saturday

The “Rendez-vous des Cajuns” Cajun Music Radio & TV show Saturday at the Liberty Center at 6 p.m. will feature a performance by Terry & The Zydeco Bad Boys. Show starts at 6 p.m. The Liberty opens at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, and children ages 7 to 12 are $3.

The benefits to quitting smoking

I’m thankful that I never had the urge to start smoking and that my parents do not smoke nor do my daughters. I’m not by no means condemning my friends and family who do smoke. However, after reading the following, courtesy of Newspaper Metro, the health benefits of quitting smoking are endless.

The Eunice Public Library lists its newest books for July.

Library’s grand prize winner of a bicylce

Carson Thompson’s name was drawn in a drawing of library readers July 26 during the library’s end of the summer reading program. Thompson was named the grand prize winner of a bicycle donated by Walmart in Eunice. Thompson, 7, is a second grader at Glendale Elementary.

4-H summer program benefits rural students

ANGIE — A group of students in Washington Parish are waking up each weekday morning eager to go to summer school. The program at Wesley Ray Elementary School, however, isn’t a traditional remedial summer school.

Some clarifications on new start time and ending time of school at Eunice Jr. High and Eunice High School are listed. Junior high and high school students begin their day at 7:30 a.m. and dismissal time each day will be 2:40 p.m.
