Orthopedic surgeon is calling Eunice home

A new orthopedic surgeon has joined the surgical team at Acadian Medical Center. Dr. Stuart Schexnayder, an orthopedic surgeon, was the guest speaker Wednesday at the Eunice Rotary Club meeting. Schexnayder will be joining in private practice with Dr. Michael Holland, an orthopedic surgeon.

Eunice Police join Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign

Eunice Police Lt. Ryan Young announced the department is joining the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Young announced the Eunice Police are joining the enforcement effort during Tuesday’s Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting.

Mayor urges safety as school resumes

The first full days of school returned last week and Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot took time during the city council meeting to remind motorists that schools are back in session.

School Board approves student, facility study

The St. Landry Parish School Board approved several studies by a demographer to determine what the school district may look like in five years. Superintendent Milton Batiste recomended the Board approve the studies to provide information to adjust grade levels and facilities.

Concealed carry permit training class set Aug. 24 The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office will host its one-day concealed carry permit training class at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 24 at 211 West Park, Eunice.

The 87th International Rice Festival will honor Troy Fruge as the 2024 IRF Farmer of the Year. Fruge began farming independently during his senior year of high school in 1983.

City may buy 2 key properties

In a quiet but consequential meeting, the Eunice Board of Aldermen approved the purchase of two properties that may become landmarks. Mayor Scott Fontenot’s proposals are for the city to buy a 10 acre site on West Ash Avenue north of of the Walking Park for $75,000.

Parish sales tax collections continued to rise in July

St. Landry Parish sales tax collections continued to rise in July when they registered an 11% increase for year-to-date total revenue in the parish, according to statistics released by the St. Landry Parish School Board tax division.
