School Board OKs officer for Eunice High

The St. Landry Parish School Board approved Superintendent Milton Batiste III signing a contract with the City of Eunice to provide a school resource officer for Eunice High School. The approval came at a special School Board meeting on Sept. 21.

Early voting begins Saturday

Early voting for the Oct. 14 election will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Eunice City Hall and Registrar of Voter’s Office in the courthouse in Opelousas. The early voting continues through Oct. 7 with the exception of Sunday. Daily times are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Jobless rates down, workforce declines

The Tri-Parish workforce declined by 356 people in August compared to August 2022, according to a Louisiana Workforce Commission report released Tuesday. The workforce totaled 67,253 in August, down 0.5% from the 67,609 counted in August 2022.

Cricket crazy

Large, black chirping crickets are appearing across Acadiana as if a plague of some sort. Aaron Ashbrook, an assistant professor at LSU, said August and September are the prime time of the year for both field cricket and mole cricket activity.

November is National American Indian Heritage Month. On Saturday Nov. 4, Chief Cougar Goodbear and members of the Coco Tribe of Canneci Tinne will hold a social from 10 a.m. to noon at the Opelousas Museum, located at 315 N. Main in Opelousas.
