School Board approves state-funded stipend

The St. Landry Parish School Board approved state-funded stipends of $2,000 to certified staff and $1,000 to support staff this fall. The Board voted for the stipends at a special meeting on Sept. 21 Long-term substitutes are to receive $1,000 stipends.

Parish finances boosted with federal money

The Landry Parish Government finances were boosted in 2022 by an infusion of federal dollars, according to Steve Moosa, CPA, of Darnall Sikes & Frederick, who delivered an audit report the Parish Council’s Sept. 20 meeting.

St. Thomas More Bazaar set Oct. 7, 8

The St. Thomas More Catholic Church Bazaar is scheduled for Oct. 7 and 8. The Saturday hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday the bazaar will open at 11 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. There will be games and entertainment for the entire family, plus bazaar foods.

Hidden danger of drought

The loss of fine feeder roots is a hidden danger of drought. Feeder roots grow out of the thick woody tree roots. While woody roots grow down into the soil, feeder roots grow up toward the soil surface. Their main job is to absorb water, minerals, and oxygen.

CDA meeting set for Monday Oct. 2 On Monday the Catholic Daughters of the Americas court Eunice 208 will hold its meeting at 6 p.m. at the Jeanmard Center on North 3rd Street. The meeting is open to all visitors who are interested in becoming involved in the CDA.

Freshman numbers increase, overall enrollment rises at UL Lafayette

For the third year in a row, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has seen an increase in the number of first-time freshmen. A total of 3,066 first-time freshmen are enrolled for the Fall 2023 semester, a 6.3% increase over last fall.

Iota Fall Festival set Saturday

The Iota Fall Festival promises to be fun for the entire family. The annual event, now in its fourth year, is scheduled for Saturday at the Iota Veterans Memorial Pavilion. The festival will be held from 2 to 11 p.m. and general admission is $10; children 4 and under are free.
