Voters to be asked to fund juvenile facility in March 2026

A vote on a 1 cent sales tax to fund a nine-parish juvenile district is possible in March 2026, said St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard.

School Board delays $1K pay raise vote

A proposal to provide a $1,000 pay raise for all full-time St. Landry School Board employees beginning July 1 was sent back to committee.

Legislators OK LSU buying equine center in Opelousas

Louisiana legislators voted to give $3.5 million in state funds to LSU to purchase a horse facility which the university did not request. The money will go toward the purchase of the 200-acre Copper Crowne Equestrian Center in Opelousas.

Library is looking for volunteers Volunteers are needed to help build a Friends of the Library organization. Tony Baltakis, president of the Eunice Library Board of Control, said the Friends organization will be the fundraising group for the library.

Child water safety, infant deaths focus for state health experts

Louisiana has the second-highest drowning rate in the United States for children. And that’s a statistic that can be easily improved upon, according to Dr. Tina Stefanski, Region 4 Medical Director, Louisiana Department of Public Health.

Mayor seeks volunteers

Mayor Scott Fontenot asked for volunteers to serve in several city positions during the city council meeting Tuesday. The meeting was marked by what is coming this month, particularly a budget for the next fiscal year and amending the current budget.

Parish sales tax collections continue to drop

St. Landry Parish year-to-date sales tax collections continue to slide below those of a year ago, according to statistics released Tuesday by the St. Landry Parish School Board tax division. In May, parish sales tax collections totaled $42,696,688, down $1,476,603 or 3.

Yearlong escapee captured

Eunice Police have recaptured Andrew Morrison, aka Bumper, 47, of Eunice, who has been on the run since May of 2024 when he escaped custody while being treated at a local hospital. Eunice Police Chief Kyle LeBouef said police acted on Sunday from an anonymous tip on Morrison’s whereabouts.
