Civil Rights Trail marker notes SLI integration

LAFAYETTE — Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, the Louisiana Office of Tourism and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette unveiled the ninth marker along the Louisiana Civil Rights Trail at the Pillars of Progress on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Church Point hospital Board remains without a chairman

The Acadia St. Landry Hospital Board of Commissioners is entering its eighth month without a chairman, and at this time, there is no set plan for completion of the U.S. Department of Agriculture loan application that would help fund the proposed construction of a new hospital facility.

Musicians celebrate birth date of Amédé Ardoin

Creole accordionists Joe Hall and Dexter Ardoin lead the monthly Zydeco Capital Jam from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. March 11 at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center, I-49 exit 23, in Opelousas. The March jam is held in honor of Cajun and Creole music pioneer Amédé Ardoin.

Black history exhibit to tour parish

St. Landry Parish Clerk of Court Charles Jagneaux is announcing an extension for a research-based exhibition that chronicles the lives and history of the African-American families who have helped shape three centuries of parish history.

Vet Fest returning to LSUE

The Vet Fest is returning to LSUE on April 1 with a symposium from 1 to 3 p.m. and entertainment from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Dr. Anthony Mumphrey Center. Pamela Veillon, LSUE veteran navigator, said the Vet Fest is back with the intent to make it an annual event.

School Board: Hoodies banned, live-streaming meetings OK’d

The St. Landry Parish School Board voted to ban hoodies, approved live-streaming its meetings and began the search for a new superintendent at its meeting Thursday. Dwanetta Scott. supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance, explained the hoodie prohibition is a safety issue.

Confederate monument still standing nearly a year after vote to remove it

The memorial to Confederate soldiers from St. Landry Parish on the courthouse square remains standing nearly a year after the Parish Council voted for its removal.
