Blue Jays fall in playoffs

HOUMA – The Blue Jays and Lions should know each other pretty well by now.
Last season, No. 18 St. Edmund stunned No. 2 Covenant Christian Academy in the high school baseball playoffs with a 6-2 win.
In the fourth game of 2017, the Lions roared to a 16-5 win in the Blue Jays’ home opener.
When the two teams met again on Thursday night in the opening round of the Division II playoffs, No. 3 Covenant Christian ended the Blue Jays’ season with a 12-2 mercy rule win.

Next step - state track meet

ABBEVILLE – Some days just don’t go as planned and sometimes there are a few surprises along the way.
After winning both the St. Landry Parish and District 5-3A titles, the expectations were high for the Eunice High Lady Bobcats heading into the LHSAA Region II-3A meet held Thursday at Abbleville High.
Kaplan won the girls title with 80 points, while Eunice was seventh with 40 points.
E.D. White captured the boys division with 80 points as Eunice finished No. 10 with 28 points.

Fontenot signs with LSU Shreveport

Eunice High senior Gunner Fontenot signed on Monday to continue his baseball career at LSU-Shreveport. Fontenot, who has been selected to play in the LHSAA All-Star Game in May, is expected to catch for LSU-S next season according to LSU-Shreveport head coach Brent Lavalee.
“Gunner has all the qualities needed to be a great catcher. He has great leadership, can manage pitchers, and has great athleticism,” commented Lavalee, who is in his first year as head coach of the Pilots.
Fontenot will join a team which Lavalee said has 16 freshmen and 16 juniors on their roster.

Bobcats blast past Tigers

Eunice High opened the Class 3A state playoffs with a 15-1 victory over the Marksville High Tigers in a contest played Monday at Bobcat Field.
The Tigers threatened to score in the top of the first inning, but Bobcat starting pitcher Jaydon Brasseaux settled in, stranding leadoff hitter Noah Johnson at third base.
The Bobcats got a single by Gunner Fontenot in the bottom of the first, but Tiger starting pitcher Jorden Mayeux retired the side without giving up a run.

Lady Cats - six in a row

With a margin of 18 points, the Eunice Lady Bobcats won the 2017 District 5-3A championship, their sixth straight district title.
Eunice scored 152 points, followed by Church Point (134), Ville Platte (130), Northwest (69), Port Barre (27) and Pine Prairie (8).
The Lady Cats swept the relays to help propel EHS to the win.
Jyhreh Johnson, Timia Thomas, A’mya Johnwell and Kiara White combined for a 52.40 finish in the 4x100 relay.
Johnson, Kiara White, Shanyia Toussaint and Johnwell also won the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:50.41.
