St. Landry and Eunice chambers of commerce held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Washington State Bank’s branch location at 215 S. 2nd St., Eunice. Washington State Bank’s President and CEO, Sue Brignac cut the ribbon.

‘Dirty Rice’ to return to Eunice

The 1990’s movie “Dirty Rice” is returning to Eunice for a showing at the Queen Cinema during October’s Experience Louisiana Festival. Filmmaker Pat Mire, who directed “Dirty Rice,” which was filmed in around Eunice, announced the film at a recent Eunice Rotary Club meeting.

Cajun music legend draws Canary Island musicians to city

Musicians, calling themselves, “Olga Cerpa and Mestisay,” from Canary Islands, south of Spain, were in Eunice Monday at the Cajun Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The musicians were particularly interested in Joe Falcon, an accordionist from Bayou Plaquemine Brulee, just north of Rayne.

Eunice Superette wins top honors at Here’s the Beef Cook-off

The Here’s the Beef Cook-off was held Sunday the St. Landry Parish Agricultural Arena. The winners included the following. Gourmet — six entries First: Eunice Superette, Willie Burson; and Second: Union Street Barber Shop, Jessica Cox.

Early voting for March election starts Saturday

Early voting for the March 25 Muncipal Primary Election will be held Saturday and Monday through March 18, at registrar of voters offices. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registrar offices include: In Acadia Parish, 568 NW Court Circle, Crowley. Contact the registrar’s office at 337-788-8841.

Eunice sales tax revenues down, parish up

Eunice sales tax revenues continued to decline in February after a dramatic rise in January, according to the St. Landry Parish School Board Sales Tax Division. Eunice’s February tax revenue was $382,807, down from $550,155 collected in January — a 30.4 percent decrease.

Parish moving on speed limits, speed bumps

New speed limits on St. Landry Parish’s newly paved roads may be brought up for Parish Council as early as April, according to Parish President Bill Fontenot. Speed limits are as low as 20 mph on some parish roads that up until the Smooth Ride Home Program were either pot-holed or gravel.

New hurdle for hospital district abolishment

The St. Landry Parish Council will be asked to seek a declaratory judgment in the 27th Judicial Court District on a plan to dissolve the First Hospital District of the Parishes of St. Landry and St. Martin, which operated the now closed St. Luke Hospital in Arnaudville.

Park Avenue rules of the road

Eunice’s Park Avenue is a broad expanse of road and median that evidently confuses motorists, walkers and joggers. Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot spoke at the February city council meeting about the rules of the road and issued a memorandum on Park Avenue travel.
