Celebrating St. Joseph our way

Special, food-filled altars begin to spring up around south Louisiana on or about March 19, the feast of St. Joseph. It’s a custom brought to New Orleans beginning in the late 1800s by Sicilian immigrants and that has migrated from there across Catholic south Louisiana.

LSUE earns praise as board meets on campus

The LSU Board of Supervisors met Friday on the LSUE campus possibly for the first time since 2005. Stephen Perry, board member, who said he had never been to the campus, called the visit an eye-opener.

Suits filed over investigative holds

The lawsuits just keep coming for the City of Ville Platte and the Ville Platte Police Department since the U.S. Department of Justice found regularly arrested and held people in jail without a warrant or probable cause.

Arson, burglary discovered

A house fire at 141 South Aymond is being investigated as a burglary turned into an arson, according to Brandt Thompson, state Fire Marshal deputy chief. The fire was reported at 1:39 p.m. Tuesday and by 3:59 Fire Chief Mike Arnold was contacted that it was possible arson and burglary.

Survey finds Eunice a tad more littered

An annual survey of litter in Eunice found the city a bit worse off this year than in previous years, according to Donna Baltakis, Keep Eunice Beautiful director. Baltakis delivered the report at Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting at the Eunice Municipal Complex.

Food drive at Walmart parking lot Nursing Specialties Home Health and Hospice, in conjunction with the Eunice food bank, will hold a food drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Walmart parking lot.

Acadia jurors meet candidates for secretary-treasurer

If the discussion during Tuesday night’s committee meeting did not scare off the candidates secretary-treasurer position, the Police Jury has a good field from which to choose a replacement for Laura Faul.
