The following are from the September 1998 files of The Eunice News. Hurricane Earl bypassed the Eunice area and headed into eastern Louisiana and western Mississippi. The Eunice News interviewed L.B. Childs, of Basile and a native of Eunice, who recalled Hurricane Audrey.

Girouard chosen as Honoree of 2017 Rice Festival

Dr. Rustum Ernest Girouard Jr. better known as “Ernest”, has been chosen as Honoree of the 2017 International Rice Festival, according to Suzy Webb, festival president. This year’s festival dates are Oct. 19 to 22. Girouard was born on March 21, 1940, to his parents, Rustum and Frances Girouard.

Cattle feud had big implications

The St. Martin Parish Courthouse sits on land that was once part of a big plantation owned by Jean-Baptiste Berard, who built what became the Castillo Hotel as his home, and who was one of the leaders in a dispute that helped set the way many of the area’s early settlers regarded each other.

Man dies after he falls into rice bin

Shortly after 4 pm Wednesday, deputies responded to the Faulk Road and Benton Road area regarding a farming accident. According to the initial investigation, farmers where working in the rice bins when an individual working fell into the bin which contained rice.
