Jays, Bobcats to start football season on Oct. 2

Let the games begin. The LHSAA executive committee voted Wednesday to allow full-contact football practices and to move the season start up one week to Oct. 1-3. According to LHSAA executive director Eddie Bonine, teams will play their Week 3 opponent Oct. 1-3 to begin the season.

Crowley rallies past Lady Jays

St. Edmund’s season opener against Crowley started off well for the Lady Jays. St. Edmund won the first two sets, but Crowley then regrouped for three straight wins in the Lady Jays’ season opener.

Bearcats expect strong season

BASILE – The seniors on the 2020 Bearcat team have advanced to the Class 1-1A state football quarterfinals three straight seasons. As a program, Basile has advanced to the quarterfinals eight times in the past nine seasons. Kevin Bertrand took over as the Bearcats head coach in 2014.

Lady Jays down EHS in scrimmage

It was only a scrimmage, but the Lady Jays and Lady Bobcats battled on the volleyball court Thursday at St. Edmund’s gym. In close matches, St. Edmund earned a 3-1 win over Eunice High, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 and 15-13. St. Edmund entertains Crowley at 4 p.m.

Bobcats expect successful season

For the first time since 1995, there will be a new head coach on the Bobcat sidelines. But Eunice High interim head football coach Andre Vige hopes that is the only change for his team entering the 2020 season. “I will still remain the play caller of the offense,” he said.

Volleyball season to begin with scrimmages

After weeks of wondering if the high school volleyball season could be played with conronavirus pandemic still in the state, the LHSAA told the schools it could begin competition. St. Edmund and Eunice High will face each other in a scrimmage Thursday at the Lady Jay gym.

Green Demons look to improve

MAMOU – Sometimes success is measured in small steps. After going 3-57 over the previous six seasons, the Mamou Green Demons finished 2019 with a 4-6 overall record. “We have hope for this season,” head coach Dwight Collins said.

The Blue Jays captured back-to-back district championship in 2017 and 2018 and this year’s St. Edmund seniors want to end their football careers with another title. Blue Jay head coach James Shiver is entering his second season and he is excited about what this team can accomplish.
