EVANGELINE DOWNS AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE SEASON BEGINS THURSDAY

THE SEASON WILL FEATURE 39 NIGHTS SCHEDULED THROUGH DECEMBER 19 OPELOUSAS – American Quarter Horse racing returns to Evangeline Downs on Thursday, October 1. The 39-day season will include 10 racing days that had been scheduled for the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

Lady Jays fall in battle with OHS

The Lady Jays put forth a valiant effort, but the visiting Opelousas Lady Tigers earned a 3-0 sweep Thursday over St. Edmund in volleyball action. In the opening set, St. Ed’s jumped out to a 6-1 lead, sparked by two timely hits by Sarah Duplechain and strong serves by Savannah DeVillier.

Fall discounts offered at state parks for overnight stays

Louisiana State Parks are offering multiple discounts on overnight stays to encourage outdoor travel in the cooler months. Many campers say the mild Louisiana winter is their favorite time of year to hike the trails or fish when bass are biting, but the mosquitos are not.

Lady Cats rally past Lady Jays

It was a battle to the final serve as Eunice rallied from a 0-2 deficit to grab a 3-2 win over St. Edmund. The Lady Jays jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in the first set, aided by two hits by Hannah Benoit, a kill by Rebecca Benoit and several Lady Cat miscues.

Scrimmages kick off season

By Tom Dodge Sports Editor The area football teams will participate in scrimmages this week as a preview and preparation for the season. Eunice High's scrimmage at Kaplan was moved from Thursday to 5:30 p.m. Friday because of the stormy weather.

St. Edmund names Homecoming Court maids

The 2020 St. Edmund High Homecoming Court has been named. St. Edmund will host its homecoming game against the North Central Hurricane on Oct. 30.

Football schedules released

When the LHSAA executive committee voted last week to start the high school football season on Oct. 1, the schedules around the state had to be adjusted. The LHSAA is allowing a scrimmage, but the season is limited to eight games with the teams starting against their original week three opponents.
