Guns Down Power Up event at the Opelousas Museum Feb. 25 In honor of Black History Month, Guns Down Power Up and the Opelousas Museum are teaming up for a day dedicated to peace, creative expression and youth.

City welcomes upcoming Balfa Week

A poster was unveiled and a proclamation made at the Eunice Board of Aldermen meeting on Feb. 14 to welcome the Dewey Balfa Cajun & Heritage Week set March 20 to 25 at Lakeview Park & Beach in Eunice. The poster is from an original artwork by Amelia Vidrine, of Eunice.

When Mardi Gras collided with a blizzard

Big preparations had been afoot for weeks for Mardi Gras celebrations across south Louisiana in 1899. It was to be especially festive because Mardi Gras fell on Valentine’s Day that year. Nobody anticipated that what may have been the worst blizzard ever to hit the state would undo it all.

Eunice Mardi Gras schedule

Start your morning off with a boucherie today as the Eunice Mardi Gras Festival continues centered on 2nd Street and Walnut Avenue. The city is hosting the Pa Ta Sa Cooking Krewe for the annual Boucherie at 9:30 a.m. Sunday on 2nd Street near the bandstand. At 3 p.m.

Sheriff reports on successes, challenges

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz was the guest speaker at the Eunice Rotary Club Wednesday. Guidroz brought along with him District Attorney Chad Pitre. Guidroz provided a 2022 annual report for the Rotarians. Guidroz is proud of a new complex building. He discussed the St.

Ivory promoted to deputy chief

Jeremy Ivory has been promoted to deputy chief of the Eunice Police Department. The Eunice Board of Aldermen approved the promotion of Ivory from lieutenant to deputy chief at its Feb. 14 meeting. Ivory, 44, may be the youngest officer to hold the department’s second highest job after police chief.

School Board hears again how critical tax renewals are

St. Landry Parish School Board members heard again how critical renewing two property taxes are for the district’s finances. John Mayeaux, a financial consultant with Sisung Group, and bond attorney Eric Lafleur repeated the tax renewals are crucial at a special meeting Wednesday.

Red elected Parish Council chairman

With all 13 St. Landry Parish Council members present there could be seven votes needed to elect a chairman and that’s how many Jerry Red got at Wednesday’s meeting.

Concealed carry permit class Saturday The St Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office will host a one day concealed carry permit training class on at 211 West Park in Eunice beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The course is $100 and $80 for a spouse or renewal.
