Tri-Parish workforce drops by 740

The Tri-Parish workforce dropped by 740 to 68,234 people in July, according to data released by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the same report released by the Louisiana Workforce Commission, unemployment rates remained at historic lows in statistics not adjusted for season factors.

Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society to meet Saturday

The Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society’s fall meeting will be held in Eunice beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Eunice Prairie for the traditional pre-meeting prairie tour. Despite the drought, the Liatris pycnostachya (prairie blazing star; plume des Kansas) should be at their peak bloom.

Zydeco and Creole accordion master Randall Jackson returns to the Zydeco Capital Jam from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center, I-49 exit 23, north of Opelousas. Jackson is the 2014 winner of the Texas Big Squeeze Accordion Contest in the zydeco category.

DOTD announces road closure in St. Landry Parish

La. 358 (Chachere Road) from La. 357 to La. 182 (0.05 miles east of La. 357 and La. 358) in St. Landry Parish will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting. The closure is necessary to install new drainage structures across the roadway.
